Muslim Woman to be Caned For...Drinking Beer
In Kuala Lumpur, a Muslim part-time model will be caned next week, becoming the first woman in Malaysia to be given the punishment under Islamic law, after she pleaded guilty to drinking beer. An Islamic court in July ordered that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno (l.), 32, be lashed six times with a rattan cane after she was caught drinking alcohol in a raid on a hotel night club in eastern Pahang state last year. Kartika will be the first woman to be caned under Islamic law after she chose not to appeal the sentence. "This is the first case in Malaysia. ... It is a good punishment because under Islamic law a person who drinks commits a serious offense," said prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi.

In Duesseldorf, a 23-year-old German convert to Islam who arrested for his connection in a plot to attack U.S. targets in Germany told a court on Wednesday that he was relieved to have been arrested and said that he now believes such an attack would be harmful to Islam. (Gee, what about all the people you would have killed and maimed!?) "Today, I would not make the decision to fight holy war," Daniel Schneider said. Schneider, along with Fritz Gelowicz and Adem Yilmaz, both 29, and Attila Selek, 23, are suspected of operating as a German cell of the radical Islamic Jihad Union. They face charges of plotting bombing attacks in Germany against American citizens and facilities across the country.

John Linley Frazier, 62, was serving a life sentence for five counts of first-degree murder. He was convicted of the Oct. 19, 1970 murders of Victor M. Ohta, M.D., 46; his wife Virginia, 43; his two sons, Derek, 12, and Taggart, 11; and Ohta's secretary, Dorothy Cadwallader, 38, in the Ohta's home near Santa Cruz.

Child Raping "Prophet" Dead
In Las Vegas, a self-proclaimed prophet and church leader arrested in July on suspicion of sex crimes against children has died. Benito Catello, 76, died on Monday at his home while under hospice care. Catello was arrested July 3 on suspicion of 29 charges, including sexual assault and lewdness with a minor under 14. Two teenage girls had told police they had sex with him in his home, where Catello ran his church.
