Young Couple Found Hanging From Tree, Honor Killing Suspected
In Chandigarh, India, police are investigating whether the deaths of two young lovers, who were found hanging from a tree, were honor killings. The couple --Sandeep Kadian, 22, and Monika, 16,-- had eloped on July 31 and a complaint was registered against the Sandeep on August 5th by the bride's father, because the couple belonged to the same clan; which is is considered forbidden.
Three Sentenced to Life for Honor Killing
In Saharanpur, India, three people, including a father and son, have been sentenced to life for an honor killing. The victim was a 26-year-old man who was "allegedly in love" with the convicted father's daughter. For his affections, the young man was beaten to death by the trio along with the father's two nephews in 2003.
Ex-Priest Charged with Sex Abuse Over 50 Year Span
In the UK, a former Roman Catholic priest is accused of sexually abusing young boys over the course of 50 years. James Robinson, 71, was extradited to the UK from the US and has been charged with 22 offenses alleged to have been committed between 1959 and 1983. Robinson is facing a series of charges including, indecent assault, indecency against a child and serious sexual assault. He will appear in court on November 3.
Terrorism Fundraiser Released
In New York, a Yemeni cleric who was sentenced to 75 years in a maximum-security U.S. prison for helping to finance terrorism was ordered to be released and deported by a federal judge on Friday. In 2005, Sheik Mohammed al-Moayad, 60, a high-ranking political leader in Yemen, was convicted of conspiracy, providing material support to Hamas and attempting to support al-Qaeda. Moayad's conviction was overturned in October by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit saying the U.S. District Judge involved with the case improperly admitted evidence during the trial that prejudiced the jury. In a new plea deal, Moayad pleaded guilty only to conspiring to provide material support to Hamas.
And finally...Archbishop to Sex Abuse Victim: "Go to hell, bitch"
In Melbourne, a woman who had been sexually abused by a priest was told to "go to hell, bitch" by the Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart in 2004. Although Hart later apologized for the outburst in court, he suddenly no longer remembers the incident. His reason? "It was a number of years ago, I don't remember precisely," he is quoted as saying.
